The culture of adorning the waist with beads for varying reasons is not uncommon among the females of several tribes in Africa. This practice is actually many generations old.

Usually enshrouded underneath the dress of a lady are waist beads which may come in different colours and sizes. As often as is the case, these beads are kept hidden. It is however the case that, occasionally, one may come across a lady whose waist beads are ostensibly on display. On other occasions, the beads may randomly and beguilingly glint at an onlooker. Be that as it may, the charm of a woman in beads practically remains irrefutable.

Traditionally, the waist bead holds much essence to the woman including but not limited to it being a symbol of femininity and sensuality as well as a measure of weight. In recent times though, women mostly wear these beads primarily for its appeal in beauty and style.

In a twitter thread started by a Nigerian twitter user, @TheMofeoluwa, she spurred her fellow ladies on to join her as they mount a vitrine of alluring photos of beaded African waists under the thread.
